Table of Contents for Google Docs™ — a clickable outline sidebar and heading numbering for Google Docs™.
Browse every heading of your Google Doc in a sidebar tree and jump to any section in one click. Number headings automatically — numeric 1.1, outline I. A. 1., or chapter style — and insert a numbered table of contents right into the document, with the numbers the built-in one cannot add. Settings are saved per document.

Contact support: [email protected]- Open a Google Doc and choose Extensions → Table of Contents for Google Docs → Open TOC Sidebar.
- Click any heading in the sidebar tree to jump to it — the highlight marks the section your cursor is in.
- Pick a numbering style and click Number headings, or click Insert in document to place a numbered table of contents at the top of the document or your cursor.
- Sidebar navigation — Every title, subtitle, and heading in one tree with a "you are here" highlight. Click a line and the cursor lands on that section — no more scrolling through fifty pages.
- Automatic heading numbering — Three styles: numeric 1. 1.1 1.1.1, outline I. A. 1., or chapter numbers. A document that starts at Heading 2 still numbers from 1., existing numbers are replaced without doubling, and Remove numbers cleans them all up.
- Numbered table of contents in the document — Insert it in Classic, Compact, or Flat style — a clean, numbered contents page printed into the document, with a title you can rename or hide. Click Update TOC to rebuild it in place. For clickable links, add Google's own Insert → Table of contents; it uses the numbers this add-on wrote.
- Settings follow the document — Numbering format, shown levels, and the table of contents style are saved per document — your thesis keeps outline numbering while meeting notes stay numeric.
Works only with the document you have open. Your text never leaves it — no external servers, no account required.
